Chuvisco da Silva
Paulo "Chuvisco" da Silva was born in Goiânia, Brasil where he started his Capoeira training at the age of eight with Mestre Guerreiro in Grupo Candeias. He holds the rank of Contramestre in Capoeira Luanda and has internationaly taught at many institutions throughout Brasil, Europe, South America, and the States. Contramestre Chuvisco has also worked with UNICEF, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Project Exchange in Bahamas. Having toured with DanceBrazil for nine years, Contramestre Chuvisco also worked in outreach programs, introducing and maintaining Capoeira awareness throughout communities and public schools. Class style: CapoeiraCapoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that involves dance, culture, music, sport, and history. Created by enslaved Africans in Brazil in the 1500s who were forbidden from practicing fighting, Capoeira had to be disguised as a song and dance, Capoeira was a means of self-protection and a way toward freedom originating in West Africa. The much-loved martial art form practiced around the globe today is a mixture of strength, flexibility, improvisation, rhythm, endurance, agility, and reflexes. |

AFRO-CUBAN La MoraLa Mora Perez
Originally from Santiago de Cuba, Danys "La Mora" Pérez Prades is an internationally renowned master of Afro-Cuban folkloric dance. Pérez is an expert dancer, teacher, dance ethnologist and choreographer specializing in all the unique styles of Afro-Cuban Culture and of her native region of the Oriente province in Eastern Cuba, a region whose cultural richness is attributable to its infusion of Afro-Haitian influences to an already vibrant Afro-Cuban context. Pérez began her dance training at an early age with Afro-Cuban and Afro-Haitian dance ensembles. At 13, she was asked to join the renowned national folkloric ballet company, Cutumba, with which she toured internationally with the company for 18 years. In 1996, She was sponsored and invited from Cuba with a sponsor letter of invitation from Djoniba Dance & Drum Centre, to teach at the school. She has since than taught at The Ailey Extension program and at Cumbe African & Diaspora Dance & Drum, Humboldt University in California, Brown University, Cornell University and other prestigious institutions. Janette Silva is a dancer, performer, and choreographer, Originally from Salvador da Bahia, Brasil, where she has studied various dance techniques since childhood, including ballet, modern, capoeira, and Afro-Brasilian dance forms, and has performed with various companies such as DanceBrazil in New York City, Bale Folclórico da Bahia in Brasil, and Bahia Brazil in Los Angeles to name a few. HAITIAN PenielPeniel Guerrier
Peniel began his formal dance training in 1987. Herve Maxi, the most prestigious teacher in Haiti, was impressed with his dancing and invited Peniel to study in his school. Subsequently, Peniel danced with the National Dance Theatre for 8 years and toured all over the world: Venezuela, Paris, Hungary, Japan, Montreal, Germany, Santo Domingo, and the United States. During this time he also toured with the Baccoulou Dance Company. Peniel pursued his studies at Ecole Nationale des Arts (ENARTS) and researched Haitian folkloric traditions at Lakou Soukrie, Danache, Lakou Souvenance, and Badjo. While in Haiti, Peniel taught at the National Dance Theatre of Haiti and ENARTS. He moved to the United States and currently teaches two classes per week at Djoniba Dance and Drum Center in New York City. He also teaches at Connecticut Ballet Center, Stamford, CT; Wellesley College, Boston, MA; and Dance Forum Studio, NYC. He is a guest artist at Smith College, Mt. Holyoke College, Greenfield Community College, Amherst College, and Brown University. He is also Artistic Director of the Tamboula Dance Company. Class style: Haitian DanceHaitian dance and music such as Rara, Yanvalou and others originating form Benin, west Africa, is also mixed with some of the French slave master court dances while predominantly showcasing the voracious torso, pelvis and leg movements with the strong rhythmic drums of Africa. |

• Students can register online or in person at the front desk
• New Students: Photo ID required to complete a short registration form and to register. New students will not be allowed into class without first completing this process.
• All purchases are final, non-refundable, & non-transferable.
• Teachers and class locations are subject to change.
• 10 Class Card series may be extended, for a $20 extension fee, for an additional 30 days up to 1 year after the original purchase date.
• All unused cards will be voided one year after original purchase date.
• Class Cards are non-transferable, non-refundable, and will not be replaced if lost or stolen.
• Classes may be changed/cancelled without any advanced notice.
